Integrated Business Planning

What is “Integrated Business Planning” (IBP)?

It’s a tool that today has greatly helped companies to coordinate efficiently and effectively the tasks that must be carried out in real time within the corporation. The different departments of the corporation work in a synchronized manner, with the objective of achieving multiple goals, and keeping specific and precise control of their demand, their market forecasts, inventories, and more activities.

What is “Sales and Operations Planning” (S&OP)?

It is a tool that, like the IBP, helps the departments of the companies to be more interconnected and communicated, so that there is a good flow of information within the processes and operations, both operational and administrative. It also helps to have better control of financial capital, as well as more precision in supply chains and logistics lines.

What are the similarities between IBP and S&OP? Mention and describe them.

Both tools allow a better profitability for companies, as well as optimizing the resources they use, the capital they manage (financial, human and intellectual) within their activities, and also allow a better coexistence and attention to their market target.

What are the differences between IBP and S&OP? Mention and describe them.

The IBP is a tool that is more focused on the history of sales or purchases of a company, allowing to analyze in turn, how the behavior of markets and resource providers has been, it also focuses on marketing strategies used and the benefits or fruits that they have given.

On the other hand, S&OP focuses more on statistics and numerical data, both inventories and warehouses (and their efficient use in terms of the supply line and logistics), in short, this tool has a dedicated focus more to the supply chain, transportation and delivery, and internal and external logistics of the company.

How does the IBP process work? Describe in detail.

The IBP is a tool that works based on the great information stored in itself, and based in the same way on the objectives of the organization. That is, it is an integrated system that contains information about the behavior of demand, purchasing preferences, sales histories, sales histories, market demand forecasts, company financial information, etc. All information is collected and captured by administrative staff, and allows easy access to such information in real time, wherever, whenever.

What are the challenges of IBP?

The big challenge of the IBP is make a consensus plan that helps achieve multiple goals, like translating plan into net revenue forecast, gross margin projection, better working capital, highlight risks & opportunities, while driving accountability, collaboration and create passion for accuracy. All this activities help for making good and strategic decisions to meet organizational goals, translating in a better networking capital and positive impact on gross margin.

Which are the most common difficulties/problems when implementing IBP? Mention them and provide examples.

Personally, I think that one of the biggest problems or challenges to implement this type of tool is the training of all staff to adapt their work rhythm and activities, to a digital tool that allows easier access to data, in addition that a strong financial and time investment is required to implement them. A great example of companies that have implemented technologies such as SAP and others are the leaders in the Mexican markets for food products (such as Coca-Cola, Lala, Bimbo, etc.) that due to their large volume of demand, had to go to a tool that will help them protect and manage so much information.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of IBP?

The advantages are finally reflected in the money and the profits of the companies, since each activity that is carried out with the help of the tools, allows the company or the business to be more profitable and with it increase the money of the corporation.

On the other hand, some of the disadvantages are the high need for time to implement it, as well as the time required to train work teams for good tool management and control, which can put a little strain on operational processes. As well as can frustrate the work times of employees and managers.

What is the importance of IBP nowadays?

Its importance lies in making the tasks of companies’ easier, facilitating access and control of all the data necessary to make good and strategic decisions that allow the maximum and effective growth of businesses.
